CNR 2014: Competitions: Tour the Stairs: The service robotics competition 2014: Motivation

Inspired of the Grand Tours of Cycling which refers to the three major outdoor European professional cycling stage races: Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, the end goal of Tour the Stairs is to create a service robot which can carry things and navigate autonomously in both a "flat" (the floors) & "mountainous" (the stairs) terrain, plus to get the robot through all the challenges it shall solve on its road during an entire Tour the Stairs.

Motivation:
Many people in the service business, like servants in a cafe / restaurant, or a nurse in a nursing home / hospital, walks and carry a lot during a work day. In big buildings without an elevator, and at the homes with elderly people, the robot can be a helpful tool, which can make many people lives easier and provide them a better quality of life if the robot is able to carry food, beverage, and other things safety up and down the stairs for them to the right destination.

To get the robot integrated in an environment of a house it is therefore necessary that it is user-friendly and that there is a high design quality added to the functionality of the service robot.
