CNR 2016: Lectures: Vaclav Janoscik (CZE): The Robot Within

It is nice to reflect, embrace and experiment with new instruments, gadgets, AI and even robots. But it is not only our environment that is progressively getting automatized or robotized. We ourselves are getting to be robots from within. The way we work and entertain ourselves, communicate and feel is getting scrutinized in new circuits that are not disimilar to the circuitry of robots. In my brief talk I will try to reflect this dynamic with examples from proliferation of technical images, prospectives of egaming or inhumanism in contemporary art and philosophy. In 30 minutes or less we will try to fast forward beyond the present or the usual, beyond human/machine or culture/nature splits, to accelerate at least a bit into the (dark) future.

Václav Janoscík is a pedagogue, researcher and curator; he is curently an assistant professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and Department of Photography at FAMU, but he lectures at several other Prague-based universities (UMPRUM, FF CUNI). He focuses on contemporary philosophy and theory of media and art, nonetheless he keeps engaged in other diverse fields. In this respect it is interdisciplinarity, dialogue (between theory and arts) and the critical aspects of art which form his main interest. He edited several collective monographs, most recently the book entitled Objekt (2015), featuring translations of some key texts from speculative realism and new materialism. One of his last exhibitions, Return of the Object / Disorder of Things, tries to connect young international artist and their mode of creation with speculative realism.
